A local Gold Coast band, The Lamplights released their self titled debut album Dec 22nd, 2010.
The Lamplights is such a beautiful name. It conjures up gorgeous images of time past, of dark and foggy cobble-stoned streets in London, warmed by the delectable glow of lamplights.
The Lamplights ’self titled’ debut album mixes contemporary lyrics seamlessly with soulful, jazzy blues, ragtime and gospel giving this album the edge. This is not some old fashioned tribute to the past, this is a blend of styles packaged in a contemporary sound that doesn’t fit into a genre. There is something very fresh about that because you can’t pigeonhole this unique and interesting sound of The Lamplights.
Its influences such as Jack Johnson and George Benson add to the feel of something familiar, but fresh. There are hints of Zydeco here, but when I listen again and again, I can’t pinpoint the sound of the washboard or the piano accordion because there are none. Something in The Lamplights sound makes me feel connected to the music. Feel connected to the origins of music – Cajun, blues, R&B, and gospel.
Its upbeat lyrics are inspiring and relate to almost everyone in some form or another: love lost and found; finding oneself – but not in a melancholy sense. This album is a joyful one of self discovery, getting on and enjoying life no matter what it dishes up which leaves the listener wanting more.
The Lamplights is a fitting name because like the mystery and old feel of a lamplight, this album reflects a sound that reinvents and captures the mysterious soul of music itself.
